Start Protecting Yourself From Identity Theft Today

Identity theft, unfortunately, is becoming more and more common. While there are some things you can do to protect identity yourself, there really is no guarantee that you will never fall victim to some form. However, it is better to be as safe as possible. With that said, here are a few simple ways to protect your identity.

The first thing you must do is tear, shred and destroy all private records and statements of yours. This includes getting rid of credit card statements, receipts, bank slips and anything else that has valuable information. Any access to private financial information is simply opening the door to have your identity stolen.

Next, keep your social security number on complete safeguard. Never under any circumstances carry your card or any other card with the number on it with you. In addition, avoid putting your number on checks if at all possible. Your social security number is the number one target for identity thieves because it can give them access to everything they need including your credit report and bank accounts.

Although it may sound obvious, never leave your credit card lying around. Always keep an eye on your card at all times and pay with cash if at all possible. If you do lose your wallet or leave a credit card behind, make sure to call your bank and have the card cancelled immediately.

The last thing you want to get in the habit of doing regularly in order to avoid identity theft is review your credit card statements closely. If you do not recognize the merchants, locations or purchases on your bill, you may want to consider closing the account. Certainly talk to your bank immediately to get everything figured out.
